Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2010

Earlier this year I entered the Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2010 which is a contest that represents the best in action and adventure sports photography. In this years contest there were over 22,000 submissions from over 100 countries. I'm excited to say that one of my images was selected as a Finalist in the Top 50! There were 10 overall categories with 5 finalists in each category. My photo (of skateboard legend Duane Peters) was selected in the top 5 of the "Culture" category. The Top 50 images were unveiled on August 31st at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Unfortunately I couldn't make it to the ceremony but here are some photos/video from the event (courtesy of Red Bull Illume)....

If you're in Dublin between now and September 11th you can view the exhibition in the front square of Trinity College nightly from 8-10PM. Admission is free. Last year I had the chance to shoot with skateboard legend/punk rock singer Duane Peters for Rebel Ink Magazine. During the shoot I used my 3 favorite cameras: my Canon 35mm digital, 4x5 film/polaroid and my Holga 120N. I recently developed some old film that was sitting in my camera bag since last November and was pleasantly surprised when I found this shot on the roll. This photo shows Duane Peters lighting up a cig while driving down the 5 Freeway in downtown LA. No set-up, just capturing life as it happens.

Last month I took a much needed two week trip to Peru with my old roommate from photography school and a friend of his from high school. We planned the trip about two weeks before we left so we didn't have much time to put an itinerary together. The one thing we had to see was Machu Picchu. The rest we left to figure out once we got there. Nike Montalbán: Futsal on the Rooftop

Last night I was invited to an exclusive event at The Montalbán Theatre in Hollywood for "Futsal on the Rooftop" which was hosted by Nike. Teams consisted of some of LA's top tastemakers/influencers and there was free food, drinks and music all night. All I gotta say is...Nike does it BIG! Today I got to shoot with skateboard legend Mike Vallely for Rebel Ink Magazine. The shoot took place at Mike V's house in Long Beach, which is a big change from shooting in gritty downtown LA! I shot a few different set-ups which included his office full of framed skateboards and old photos/memorabilia, a vintage Evel Knievel pinball machine, "man cave" with vintage posters/artwork, and his classic black on black Trans Am. Last weekend I had the chance to link up with Radio/TV personality Karli Henriquez from 102.7 KIIS FM and MTV Tr3s to shoot promotional photos for her upcoming projects/events. The shoot took place at The H.Wood which is an upscale bar/lounge located just off Hollywood Blvd.

Here is a description from The LA Times: The original industrial, art-loft design (made from antique salvaged bricks and windows from Andy Warhol’s factory in New York) has been given a makeover with comfy brown leather couches and wood tables.

I'm not allowed to post any more photos from the shoot until I get the OK from Karli but here are some test shots I snapped of my friend Mando Fresko (Power106FM) who helped arrange the shoot.

Winter Road Trip: Jackson Hole, WY

I recently took a road trip up to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to enjoy some time away from the LA madness and do some (just for fun) nature photography. I used to go to Jackson Hole nearly every summer while growing up because my grandma lived a few hours away in Casper, WY. It was a nice change to be there in December with everything covered in snow. Despite the cold weather (-15 low, 15 high) I went out shooting every day. It was somewhat limiting because all the major roads to Teton National Park and Yellowstone were closed for the winter. Most of the days it was snowing with very little visibility (NOT ideal shooting conditions) but the last day of the trip it cleared up perfectly. Here are some of my favorite photos from the trip...

Papa Roach x Rebel Ink

I had the chance to link up with Papa Roach this past Wednesday night to photograph them for a feature/interview for Rebel Ink Magazine. The shoot took place in the Terra Rosa Room at The Grove in Anaheim. By the time we made it through Thanksgiving traffic I had about an hour to shoot the entire band: individual shots, group shots and close ups of all their tattoos. Once we were all set up and the band made their way over from the dressing room we had about 40 minutes to complete the shoot. The guys were really easy to work with and we finished the shoot with not a second to spare.

After we packed up the equipment I had to rush to the stage to shoot some performance shots. Here are a few of my favorites from the performance...

I recently linked up with Rebel Ink and Urban Ink Magazine to shoot a few editorials for the upcoming issues.

The first shoot was with Lydia Tavera who was on the most recent season of the hit reality TV show Big Brother. The theme for the shoot was 1940's "Rosie the Riveter" and with the location, styling and hair/make-up, the shots came out amazing! Big thanks to my make-up artist iLene for the behind the scenes pics!

The next shoot was with former professional body builder and 5 time Iron Man Pro Flex Wheeler. The mag wanted the look to be "Cali inspired" so I decided to shoot at the world famous Venice Beach. Along with Flex and the two female models (Azza and Oshone) we got A LOT of attention from tourists and onlookers enjoying a Sunday at the beach. Big thanks to Christina Guerra who did an amazing job on the girls hair/make-up.

The last shoot was with skateboard legend and punk rock icon Duane Peters. I met up with Duane in the Glendale area then we hopped in his 1979 Chevy van and cruised around Los Angeles while stopping at some of my secret locations to shoot. Duane was one of the coolest people i've had the privilege to work with. He was very humble and had some good advice for staying positive and driven. We got some of my favorite portraits i've ever taken...hands down. Big thanks to Alex and Frankie for helping out!

I also pulled out the old 4x5 view camera during the shoot to snap some polaroids...

New Equipment/Test Shots

After years of renting lighting equipment on a shoot to shoot basis, I finally made the jump and bought my first legitimate professional lighting system! This is a huge step for my career and i'm excited to finally be able to experiment with different lighting techniques....whenever I want! The kit I got is the Dynalite MK10-2303. They are super portable, generate really nice/even light, and give me the ability to have studio power lighting on location or in the studio.

Here are some test shots I did over the weekend of my cousin Alex Ramos and his dog Tank. There were some really nice clouds out so we decided to seize the opportunity and did a make shift photo shoot in his backyard.

Antwuan Dixon x Toby C. x Urban Ink Mag

If you don't know who Antwuan Dixon is, I suggest you get familiar...

I linked up with Antwuan back in July at the Baker Boys Distribution Warehouse in Los Angeles, CA to photograph him for Urban Ink Magazine. Antwuan flew his tattoo artist, Mucca out from Tampa Bay, Florida to get a new tattoo for the photo shoot and decided to get the Deathwish Skateboard logo tatted under his belly button. It was literally one of the last open spots on his entire upper body. Here are some behind the scene videos from the shoot that pretty much sum up the entire experience of spending a day with Antwuan Dixon, one of the greatest skateboarders alive (not to mention a really cool dude, despite his reputation).

Big thanks to Steve Clare (Supra), Jeremy Gonsalves (Baker Boys Dist.), Paul Gambino (Urban Ink), Alex Ramos and Miles McAlpin for being a part of this project and helping to make it happen!

Felonious Brand Fall 2009 Collection

I recently shot the look book for Felonious Brand, a brand that my cousin/graphic designer/founder Alex Ramos and I started back in 2003. After six years in the making and numerous successful limited run lines, we are finally getting ready to step our brand to the next level. We have 6 new t-shirt designs in two color ways each that will be available soon on our website as well as select high end sneaker/clothing boutiques. This is just the beginning as we plan to introduce denim, outerwear, New Era fitted's and more as soon as Spring '10.

Here is a sneak peek at some of the photos from the look book shoot which featured LA born rapper Lite, Harlem born rapper Kev-Nice, professional skateboard photographer Frankie Martinez and musician/writer Mark Harley.

Sorry for the lack of posts recently....it's been a busy summer for me and finding time to blog has been few and far between these days. I have some big projects in the works (as usual) and am looking forward to see what this Fall has in store for me.

Urban Ink Mag x Antwuan Dixon and Spader Clothing Shoots

This weekend was a busy one for me with back to back shoots yesterday and today. The first shoot was with professional skateboarder Antwuan Dixon for Urban Ink Magazine. I Got Mail!

It's not every day that I get something cool in the mail....it's usually bills, more bills and credit card offers. Well today I received a gift from my friend and fellow photographer James Maciariello. I met James a couple years back during a photo trip to the Salton Sea and we've kept in touch since. James was recently chosen for the "Best in Nature" photography competition held by the Ordover Gallery in San Diego. Out of the 2,000 images submitted, James was one of the 70 finalists chosen for the show. Congrats man!

In light of the contest, James decided to have his own contest on his blog: www.masterworkimage.blogspot.com where the person who chose his winning image out of 10 images would get a print of their choice. I was the winner of that contest and here's what I got in the mail today...

The Finals - Game 1

Today was Game 1 of the NBA Finals in Los Angeles. When I woke up, my plans were to get together with some friends later on and watch the game.....on TV. As i'm getting ready for the day, I get a call from a good friend asking if I wanted to go to Game 1 in his VIP Box suite!! For a second I thought I was dreaming! haha. I've been a Lakers fan as long as I can remember and to get a chance to go to a Finals game is unreal.

I only had about 30 minutes before game time to shoot photos (they're really strict during finals) and about 10 minutes after the game on the way to the car. Here's some of the highlights from the night....

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. The start of 2009 has been busy and productive. I have a number of projects in the works and I've recently decided to put commercial shoots on hold to concentrate on my more important work, my charity photos from Africa. I just updated my website with a new section that has some of my favorite portraits from Ghana. Click HERE to view gallery.

The book is about 95% complete and I am currently contacting galleries around the world that are interested in showcasing my work.

I recently developed a roll of 120 Film with photos from late last year taken with my Holga. Some of the shots were reeeally under exposed, but here's some of the shots that came out.

I was out in West Covina tonight where 9Grand Clothing was hosting a fashion show at Crazy Horse Nightclub. The show was hosted by Faahz from Power106FM and there was a special guest performance by Kid Cudi. The fashion show featured some pieces from the 9Grand Holiday 2008 Collection.

One of my biggest clients (and Norway's finest), Pirelli Poe, is releasing his highly anticipated new single "Dead People" feat. Cool & Dre in early '09. The Lake Show!

I got invited to the Staples Center tonight to see the Lakers take on the New York Knicks. Being that it was my first live Laker game, we had to do it in style with the Executive Box Suite.

Before tip off, a couple of Laker girls stopped by the suite for a quick photo op...

Then it was GAME TIME!

The half time dessert cart was danger!

After a terrible first half, the Lakers pulled it together to come from behind for the win. KOOOBE!

Funniest part of the night was when the big screen switched multiple times from Spike Lee in a throwback Knicks jersey to a grinning Jack Nicholson as the crowd screamed "BOOOOO!" (to Spike) and "YEEEEEEAH!!!" (to Jack). Classic!

I met up with Mando from Power 106FM tonight to shoot photos for his 2009 Media Kit. This is my second shoot with Mando and as usual he came prepared with a few suitcases full of wardrobe, 16 pairs of sunglasses, an army of kicks and even a 70's style news anchor outfit....mustache, wig and all!

SB Roadtrip

Nicole is in town from Hawaii so we decided to take a roadtrip up to Santa Barbara.

On the way up we stopped in Montecito to check out the view from the old Brooks campus. Luckily it wasn't affected by last weeks fires.

Once we were in town we drove out on the pier to snap a couple pics before the sun went down. The water had me in a fisheye mood...

Later that night I met up with my old roommate Chandler and his two roommates Bobby and Randy. Out of nowhere they decide to pack their diving equipment and head down to Thousand Steps Beach to hunt for lobster. Since I had no intention of getting in the water, I grabbed my camera and went along to document the experience.

While the guys were in the water, I shot a few nightscapes from the beach...

About 45 minutes later the guys come out of the water, bags filled with lobster.

We stopped to take a few victory shots, then we headed to a BBQ at a friends house for fresh lobster and steak! Perfect end to a great day!

PDN Photo Plus Expo - NYC

I dropped by the Javits Center in Manhattan today where they were hosting the PDN Photo Plus Expo. This is the premiere expo for professional photography. They had hundreds of the top companies marketing their latest products.

The first booth I went to was the Advertising Photographers of America (APA) booth. I recently entered their 26th annual photo contest and they were announcing the winners at the expo. They had an Apple iMac with the winning images on rotation, and a few seconds into the slide show, three of my images from my charity trip to Ghana, Africa came up. It was a proud moment to see my images on display at such a huge event. Click HERE to view the winning images.

At the end of the day I stopped by the Canon booth to check out the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I'm really looking forward to the new full 1080P HD video feature. It's a new age for the SLR.....

Brooklyn Bridge

So I've been in the Big Apple the past week and tonight I decided to shoot some night photos of the Brooklyn Bridge. I found this spot on the Brooklyn side of the bridge looking back at Manhattan. I waited over an hour and a half in the freezing cold wind to get the right lighting. I took this photo using a tri-pod mounted Canon EOS 5D with my 16-35mm L-series Lens. To get the effect on the water and clouds I exposed the scene for 146 seconds @ f/22.

Just got back from a shoot with up and coming model/actress Melissa Santa Cruz. The first part of the shoot took place at MKDunn Studios in downtown LA and we finished the day near the LA river just east of downtown. I met up with Norwegian rapper Pirelli Poe at the Tower Hotel in Beverly Hills today for a photo shoot. Poe was in town to pick up his new chain from I.F. & Co. founder and CEO Ben Baller as well as to shoot the video for his debut single "Dead People" which was produced by Cool & Dre. I noticed Poe had some new ink since the last time we shot.

We wrapped the shoot just in time for me to watch my team (USC) deliver a certified ass whooping to the Ohio State Buckeyes. 35-3! OUCH!

Making my way into music videos, I met up with The Ruckazoid and Diamond Z at MKDunn Studios in downtown LA tonight to shoot the video for their new song "Gotta Push". Alex Ramos was there to co-direct the video and take part in the late night creative session. The entire video was shot green screen and will feature some crazy 80's style 2D graphics. Magic/9Grand C.R.E.A.M. Mixer

Just got back from a crazy 24 hours in Sin City for MAGIC. I made the four hour drive with my friend Matt Dunn and met up with Marlon (Authentix) around noon to head into the show.

First we stopped by the 9Grand booth to say what up to Mark and Jason.

This is definitely their biggest line yet with full cut and sewn outerwear including custom denim, button downs, jackets, hoodies and custom fitteds by Estate LA. Expect big things from these guys...their attention to detail is on point.

Ran into some friends of mine, DJ SourMilk and Mando from Power 106FM radio station in Los Angeles. "The guys on this postcard look familiar"...

After the show we cruised down the strip to Mandalay Bay where the 9Grand crew was setting up for the C.R.E.A.M. mixer in one of the media suites.

There was a good turn out for the mixer but being that it was Vegas, i'm gonna have to end this post here. We did a lot of networking, met some cool people and made it back in one piece....good times. Definitely looking forward to MAGIC '09!

Today I met up with the guys from 9Grand Clothing to shoot their ad for the fall issue of Antenna Magazine. The shoot took place in my hometown of Claremont, CA. We started out at Authentix Sneaker and Clothing Boutique and then made our way to a few locations around Claremont. We finished the shoot at Casa 425, a new high end hotel in downtown Claremont. Photo Shoot: Ricci Rucker

Back in Downtown for a shoot with Ricci Rucker aka The Ruckazoid. Ric is doing some big things so naturally he needs some fresh images to match his music. We spent the better part of 10 hours in a dark studio full of keyboards, synths, fog machines and gelled florescent lights.

Around 10PM we were starving for some food and needed to take a break from the photo sesh. We headed over to Hollywood Blvd. to a spot called Palms Thai.

On the way in we randomly passed by Rose McGowan. I couldn't help but picture her with a machine gun for a leg (Grindhouse)...haha!

If seeing a famous Hollywood actress wasn't enough, they took it to another level with the Asian Elvis Presley. Believe it or not, this dood had the voice on lock! Ric and Alex were in disbelief...

Behind the Scenes: Matthew Dunn

I was down in Marina del Rey today assisting on a fashion shoot for my friend Matthew Dunn. Matt and I went to Brooks together and I haven't seen him since I left almost two years ago. Time flies! Matt is constantly progressing in his work and is always pushing himself to the next level. Don't be surprised if you see him shooting for GQ or Vanity Fair one day. The shoot was a lot of fun. He had two models, Amanda Blair and Dylan Monroe. Here's a few behind the scenes photos I shot...
